Excl: Mikel leaves Dream Team camp
John Obi Mikel has left the Nigeria camp in Brazil and will not be
returning with the team to Nigeria following their Bronze medal win at
the just concluded Rio Olympic Games, fcnaija.com can reveal
exclusively.
The Nigeria skipper was one of the country’s best players as they won Bronze at the Olympics, equaling a record previously held by Germany, Serbia and Hungary of being the only teams to have won all medals – Gold, Silver and Bronze – at the Olympic Games, having previously won the Gold (Atlanta ’96) and Silver (Beijing 2008).
He left the team’s Belo Horizonte camp shortly after they defeated Honduras 3-2 to claim the Bronze medal, and has returned to London, where he will rejoin his Premier League club, Chelsea.
“Yes, Mikel has left and returned to London,” a source confirmed to fcnaija.com.
The 29-year old started pre-season with the former English champions but left to join the Nigerian team as they prepared for the Games in Atlanta, the United States.
In his absence, the Blues have started the season well, winning their first two games. They beat West Ham 2-1 on the opening weekend, and beat Watford by the same scoreline on Saturday.
