Euro 2016: Pique hails Ineista, Ramos shocked by Casilas’ snub

Spain match winner Gerard Pique and the team’s skipper on the day have both reacted to Monday’s hard fought victory over Czech Republic.
While Pique hailed Barcelona team-mate Andres Iniesta for the perfect pass that ensured his goal in Spain’s 1-0 win over Czech, Ramos admits it is “unusual” not to have Iker Casillas behind him for Spain but insists Monday’s win against Czech Republic “is the line to follow”.
Iniesta picked out Pique in the Czechs’ penalty area on 87 minutes with an inswinging cross, which the defender headed past Petr Cech as Spain began their European Championship defence with a victory and the centre-half couldn’t help but heap praises on his team-mate.

“I think we played very well, we controlled the game very well, but the ball wouldn’t go in. I was lucky to score, but the whole team were phenomenal.
“We didn’t despair, we tried to attack with order and make the pitch as big as possible, and we created many chances until we reached their goal.
“We wanted to win and knew it was very important to start by picking up all three points. [On Iniesta’s assist], what a pass, what quality Iniesta has. [On seeing his son in the stands], I saluted him. He was there in the stands, wearing his Spain shirt.” Pique is quoted as saying on Football Espana.
In the wake of David de Gea’s emergence as Spain’s number one ahead of Casilas for their Euro 2016 curtain-raiser against Czech Republic, Ramos made it clear the saga surrounding the Manchester United goalkeeper was “more than forgotten”.
“Is more than forgotten. The Coach tries to put out the fairest team, it’s he who makes the decisions. We’ll try to give our best, and from there it’s what God wants.
“[On Casillas not being in goal], after so many years it’s unusual [not to see him behind me], but De Gea had a great season and has arrived well.
“[On being captain], I’m proud to represent my country, but [the armband] isn’t important. The most important thing is to lead [my country] and win [at the same time].” Ramos who is is the second in command behind Casilas in the La Rojas dressing room added.
