Onazi to Captain Eagles against Mali
Barring any last minutes changes, Lazio of Italy midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi will be the one to lead the Super Eagles in Friday’s friendly against the Eagles of Mali FCNaija.com has reliably gathered.
Camp sources disclosed that interim Super Eagles Coach Salisu Yusuf is favourably disposed to Onazi wearing the captain’s armband even though there are one or two more senior players at the Rouen, France camp.
If Onazi gets the chance to lead the Eagles on Friday, this would be the first time he would be starting in that capacity even though he has worn the armband before now; the last during the friendly in Belgium when the then captain Ahmed Musa was pulled off and Obi Mikel refused to collect the armband handed to him.
Recall that Onazi made his debut for the senior Nigeria national team in an African Cup of Nations qualification match against Liberia.
His first goal came in his second international match, a 3–1 friendly win over Venezuela in Florida and he was in the Super Eagles team that emerged champions of Africa at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.
