We would’ve won Gold with me in charge – Maigari
Former president of the Nigeria Football Federation Aminu Maigari has
suggested Nigeria would have won the Gold if he was still in charge of
Nigerian football.
The Nigerian Olympic Games football team won the country’s sole medal – a Bronze – at the just ended Games in Brazil, and while it has elicited a level of satisfaction from many Nigerians, Maigari however has suggested it would have been different if it were him in charge.
“As the immediate past president of the Nigeria Football Federation, if I had to go for such a competition, I would go for the highest level,” said Maigari on Lagos Talks FM.
“To my mind, I would have preferred to win the Gold medal, no doubt about that.
“I am just expressing my mind and when you consider the Nigerian fighting spirit and as a passionate person about football.
“But there is nothing one can do, what God designs is what happens, day in, day out.”
Nigeria seemed destined to reenact the feat of 20 years ago when they won the football Gold in Atlanta, but were undone when they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Germany in the semifinals.
They however went ahead to beat Honduras 3-2 to win the Bronze medal, which means Nigeria has now won all the medals in the football event of the Olympics, having previously won Gold in Atlanta in 1996, Silver in Beijing in 2008.
Meanwhile, Nigeria failed to qualify for the football event of the 2012 Games when Maigari was president of the NFF.
