State of the Nation: Soyinka visits Buhari

Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, yester­day visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa to discuss the state of the nation.

Soyinka, who had been sup­portive of Buhari right from last year’s presidential election, was however, taciturn in his re­sponse to questions from jour­nalists on his mission to the seat of power.

He initially told State House correspondents who ap­proached him for interview that “I didn’t come here to see you people.”

When persuaded to speak further, he answered: “I came to discuss one or two things. I came to talk about a few things, national and international mat­ters - general matters. That’s all.

“I will be holding a press conference in about a week’s time, you can ask me any ques­tion you like there. For now, I will just like to get away.”

The Nobel laureate was vo­cal in his condemnation of the past administration of Good­luck Jonathan especially in its twilight days.

Although, he pointed out that Buhari was not the best option in the country, he still saw him as a better candidate.

Soyinka, who became the first African to win the pres­tigious Nobel Prize for Lit­erature in 1986, has however, reportedly been less than ef­fusive in praising the Buhari presidency in the last few months.
