Mourinho arrives back at Manchester ahead of Tuesday unveiling
Jose Mourinho has arrived back in Manchester as he begins preparations for his first season in charge at Manchester United.
The new United manager pulled into Manchester Piccadilly station in the early hours of Monday morning ahead of his Tuesday unveiling at Old Trafford.
The Special One announced his arrival on Instagram telling followers: ‘I am here/UNITED we can,’ alongside a video of him disembarking the 21.25 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly service.
Tuesday will mark Mourinho’s first day of work back in the public eye since his unceremonious sacking at Chelsea in December, when he faces the press as United manager for the first time.
But he arrives in Manchester having already made a good start to a busy summer of transfer business with deals for Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan already sealed.
Mourinho took the two-hour 47-minute journey from his home in London in first class, with tickets priced at £237.50, arriving at Manchester’s main transport hub at 00.12 on Monday morning.
Never one to be upstaged, his public announcement of his arrival in Manchester follows rival Pep Guardiola’s unveiling at local rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
At a ceremony held outside the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola attempted to play down the importance of the former Real Madrid and Barcelona bosses coming head-to-head again.
“In England, the people don’t come to see the manager, they come to see how good our players are,’ Guardiola said.
“I don’t think just this year, but in the past as well, with Mourinho, with (Jurgen) Klopp, with (Antonio) Conte, with (Claudio) Ranieri, (Mauricio) Pochettino, (Ronald) Koeman, but the reason I work here is just to help the players.
“I’ve come here to learn, learn the way the people live here, for my family, for my kids. That is why I was curious to move in Europe.”
