Why Benue Assembly is still shut - Speaker
The inability of the Benue State House of Assembly to reconvene for
the Second Legislative Session of the Eighth Assembly scheduled for
last Tuesday has been attributed to the ongoing renovation work at the
old building housing the principal officers of the Legislature.
In a statement by Mr Bem Abunde, the Chief Press Secretary to the
Speaker, Mr Terkimbi Ikyange, he said the House adjourned to mark the
end of the First Legislative Session to reconvene last Tuesday in
anticipation that renovation on the complex would have been completed.
Abunde explained that since the first phase of the work has to do with
roofing, it has become impossible for the lawmakers to resume
considering the high risk that is involved coupled with damages incurred
as a result of the exercise.
He disclosed that office equipment worth millions of naira have been
damaged as a result of persistent rain and listed offices worst hit as
those of all the principal officers, members, clerk, legislative,
finance and publications departments, as well as the Library.
The CPS stated that the speaker, Ikyange who led some principal
officers of the House to inspect the renovation work and the damaged
office equipment at the complex a few days ago, heeded the appeal by the
contractor for more time to enable him complete the roofing.
