WAMCO to invest 3bn in small scale dairy farming
As part of concerted effort towards the development dairy and
livestock farming in Nigeria, Friesland Campina WAMCO, makers of peak
milk has confirmed their decision to invest N3 billion into its small
holder dairy farmer programme in Nigeria.
The Dairy Development Programme (DDP) is a private public partnership
and an initiative of Friesland Campina WAMCO aimed at triggering growth
in dairy farming in Nigeria.
Speaking at the renewal of the Diary Development Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and
Rural Development, the Managing Director Friesland Campina WAMCO,
Rahul Colaco stated that this is line with the company’s mission of
nourishing Nigerians with quality nutrition as well as helping Nigeria
towards achieving sufficiency in milk production.
“We will launch the small dairy farmer holder concept starting with a
cluster of 50 farmers which today is globally recognised as the most
sustainable and socially inclusive way of dairy farming across
countries like India, Uganda, Kenya and Rawanda and we will demonstrate
our commitment to the local communities by supporting existing dairy
farms starting with Milcopal in Kaduna State by providing them with
technical assistance. We will put our money where our mouth is that is
why we are investing over three million Naira in this programme”, he
said.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh
while commending Friesland Campina for the initiative stated that the
business of dairy and cattle rearing is of strategic importance to the
nation’s survival.
The Minister assured the company of government’s commitment to the
development of the dairy and livestock sector, stressing that the
ministry would fulfill and also improve on its part of the MoU when and
if the need arises.
