Pregnant woman, husband, 16 others die in Abia, Ogun road accidents
Tragedy struck Saturday in Abia State as a seven-month pregnant woman,
her husband and a family friend who assisted the couple with free ride
died in an auto crash.
Another 15 others also died in a motor accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
An eyewitness said that the Abia accident occurred near the Ubakala
Junction of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway when the Honda Pilot SUV
car the victims were travelling in collided with an on-coming tipper
lorry.
The couple allegedly went to Aba to shop in anticipation of their new
baby when the friend who was coming to Umuahia from his base in Port
Harcourt, Rivers State met them and offered them a free ride.
The driver of the car, who was said to have got a job in Port Harcourt
about six months ago, was returning to visit his parents in Umuahia when
the disaster occurred.
When The AUTHORITY visited the driver’s house at World Bank Estate,
Umuahia, the devastated parents and siblings were seen weeping.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State was said to have aided the
rescue of the victims when his convoy arrived at the scene of the
accident on his way to Aba.
The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the mortuary of the
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, while the police have taken into
custody the driver of the tipper lorry.
The Police Public Relations Officer of Abia State Command, Ogbonna
Nta, who confirmed the accident, said that “time has come for drivers
using the expressway to be cautious due to the ongoing rehabilitation
work.”
In the Ogun incident, 15 occupants of an 18-seater bus with
registration number, Lagos AGL 373 XR yesterday lost their lives when a
tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as Petrol
collided with the bus.
The accident which occurred at the Fidiwo/Ajebo axis of the road in
Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State left all the
passengers dead on the spot.
