New Bill: Reps peg age of President, govs at 30
The House of Representatives yesterday reduced the age at which to
contest for the offices of the President and governor to 30 years.
The House also reduced the age of House of Representatives and State
House of Assembly to 25 years of age and mainstreamed independent
candidacy into Nigeria’s electoral process.
The Bill to this effect, which passed Second Reading on the floor of
the House, seeks to alter Sections 65, 106, 131, 177 of the 1999
Constitution as amended and stipulated the qualification to contest
for the office of the President at 40 and 35 years for governor while
the Senate is 35 and 30 years for federal and state Houses of Assembly
