NASME makes case for diversification of the economy
The
Chairman, Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises
(NASME), Rev. Taye Adeyemo has called on Nigerians to re-engage their
strategy to improve the economic situation of the nation.
Adeyemo
who stated this at the 2016 Mega Trade Fair, Media Launch and Press
Conference organised by Mr. Delight Owoyemi last Thursday at Ibadan,
the Oyo State capital, said that Nigeria for too long depended only on
one source of revenue which is why the people are suffering today.
Speaking
on the topic: ‘Diversifying Nigerian economy: discovering sustainable
alternatives to oil’, Adeyemo said that the government had devoted
much of its earnings from the non-oil sector to develop oil.
According
to him, oil has put the nation’s resources in the hand of few. The
over-dependence on oil in the country has brought the nation to its
present hardship.
“The
oil is gradually going into extinction and price falling every minute.
It is good that government now realises that only the development of
the non-oil sector could guarantee all-round development,” he said.
He said that exporters of products from the non-oil sectors have a brighter chance enhancing the nation’s economic growth.
The
Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Michael Adeyemo, and the
Ibadan Zonal Director, Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mrs.
Pauline Ehusane, also called for the diversification of the economy.
Adeyemo,
who was represented by Hon Gideon Aremu said that the current
economic situation of the country demanded discipline, hard work,
sincerity and devotion.
