Mourinho takes a step closer to Mkhitaryan signing
Manchester United’s bid to land Henrikh Mkhitaryan has moved a step closer after Dortmund admitted to receiving a ‘much improved’ offer for their midfield playmaker.
New United manager Mourinho is believed to be desperate to add the Armenia international this summer as United look for more attacking invention.
But club chiefs had been left exasperated at Dortmund digging their heels in during negotiations and privately admitted they seemed to be fighting a losing battle.
That has changed over the last few days, however, after the 27-year-old’s agent Mino Raiola held talks with the Bundesliga side last week in a bid to force a move.
The fee is believed to be around £26million, with the Armenian only having one year left on his current deal and Dortmund seemingly now ready to cash in.
And speaking about their No 10, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke admitted on Tuesday that the situation is changing.
“The situation is now different,” he told Sport Bild. “Manchester have made a much improved offer. In situations like this there are always a lot of different things to consider and in the end at one point we have to make a decision.
“And as we are back in training on Monday we will decide at the weekend. I have contacted the relevant people and we will weigh things up at the weekend. And then the board will make the decision, definitely at the weekend.”
Dortmund are back for pre-season training next Monday, with Mourinho expected to begin life as United boss on the Wednesday.
