Barcelona confident in Alves successor – Fernandez
Shortly after confirming the departure of Brazilian
defender Dani Alves, Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez
confirmed that the club already have perfect replacements.
The 33-year-old is currently with the Brazilian team preparing for the Copa America to be hosted by the United States this summer but Aleix Vidal and Sergi Roberto are primed to fill his position at Blaugrana next season.
“That’s why we signed Aleix Vidal, so of course we have trust in him, ” Fernandez said at a press conference.
“When we decided to sign him he’s a player playing for Spain who just had a great season for Sevilla, and since then Sergio Roberto has burst onto the scene.
“Aleix Vidal signed as cover for this situation and Sergi Roberto is a very versatile player, so it’s not something we need to assess at the moment.”
Fernandez went on to reveal that Barcelona are not interested in re-signing Hector Bellerin from Arsenal this summer.
“It’s not something I am proposing at the moment,” he added. “He’s a magnificent player, we knew him very well here. He was born as a footballer at La Masia, but at the moment I’m not planning to bring him back.”
Alves joined Barcelona in 2008 from La Liga side Sevilla and won all the titles in World Club football including the La Liga title and Copa del Rey in his last season for the Catalan.
