Jaguar let the cat out of the bag on Thursday when they revealed that
Manchester United had landed their man, Jose Mourinho on a four-year
deal. Mourinho has created a template for success – which he has
achieved at every club he has been with since Porto.
While a lot of romanticists believe Mourinho’s teams are not able to
play riveting football, others have answered that clubs ultimately need
success, however they achieve it [leave Arsenal out of this].
So, Mourinho has arrived at Old Trafford, at a club he has always
eyed, because of his adulation for the retired Sir Alex Ferguson.
And with a Mourinho appointment, there are three sure things to happen in the next three years:
- Most young players will find it hard to play
Mourinho does not have time to cuddle and pet. This is because he
wants to win and he does it with proven professionals not 17 or
18-year-olds! He is passionate and driven and may seem over-bearing but
all his senses are geared towards winning, which ultimately means he
does not have that ‘time’ to be correcting all the time. He does not
give long ropes for mistakes – it could be one strike and you are out.

- They will probably win the league next season
From Chelsea to Inter Milan to Real Madrid, Mourinho has picked the
title in his second year in charge. This template is using the first
year to get 80% of the team ready for the assault and getting in two or
three players in the summer to complete the jigsaw puzzle. If he does
not lead United to the title in his first season, then almost surely,
they will win it in the second – you can take that to the bank!
- He will pick fights within his organisation in the third year
With the third year comes Mourinho’s itching feet. He will pick
fights within his own organisation – against a director or against a
club icon and things would escalate from there. But he has always said
that he wants to create a dynasty – something he could not achieve at
Chelsea, but he could have finally found the settled place to create
that dynasty. United have had just four managers in the last 30 years
though they have had three in the last three!
